OOTD (comeback review): a song for the girls

(promo images from dreamcatchers Instagram for their latest comeback)

first off, I will admit to being quite a bit bias towards Dream Catcher. I do go a bit feral over them and am always excited to hear their comebacks.

Promo:

When I first saw the teaser images, I had some doubts as the styling for some members

reminded me a lot of 2016 and I do not have many fond memories of 2016. however, faith was restored when the first audio teaser came out and I was flabbergasted by their outfits and was excited by how much i liked the glimpse of the song that we got.

First impressions:

I was so excited to watch this MV, I was awake at the time it came out but wanted to watch it with a friend. Unfortunately, the only time we could watch it together was on the train home for thanksgiving so...it wasn't the most pleasant watching experience. However, the comeback was refreshing and a nice break in concept while keeping their general sound. I think their very recognizable and unique voices make it so that they never sound boring no matter the genre. I thought that this new comeback was really aimed for finding new insomnia and growing their fanbase.

My favorite part of the song is definitely the pre chorus, "Rise...."

Handong's voice really shined during that part and was a part I caught myself rewinding to listen to again.

I loved the "I'm only doing better" adlib from Yoohyeon and Gahyeon, I think it suited the song really well and was spoken very naturally.

final (as of now) impression:

I'm obsessed with the narcissism in this song. there's really no decorum and I love it, but on a more serious side I think all the members really have a chance to shine this era and each member of dreamcatcher shows their talents as individuals and as group members.

The line distribution was really great, JiU really stood out even with out having the most lines. I couldn't imagine anyone else doing her killing part "I'm Venus Nephthys call me a goddess."

I think this could be a really interesting start to their next trilogy/or duology.

I also think Gahyeon stood out, her version of the adlib was really satisfying to listen to as well as her counting part plus everyone's thrilled about her bringing back her pink hair.

mixing and production

(I'm just a music student..so i'm not a professional these are just some opinions pls don't kill me)

I'm not the biggest fan of how they mixed Siyeon's voice at the beginning, I think dreamcatcher company does this to her a lot, where her voice is super compressed to the point where it blends in with the music too much, I would love to hear her vocals come to the front of the track more and without as much drive or distortion. However, I can appreciate that when JiU's voice comes in a bit more forward in the track it helps build momentum towards the pre chorus which is very important for a song with an (kind of) anti-drop. I do see how adding drive and distortion to their vocals creates more of a "rock" vibe. However, I would like to hear their voices a bit clearer.

I do love their layered vocals, they've really outdone themselves on that end I think the vocal arrangement was really impressive, same with the harmonies. JiU and Dami's voices really complimented each other while speaking the "I'm spotless" section. We got a glimpse of really great the cool vocal arrangements that they are capable of in Maison and I really hope they continue to do this layering in their future songs.

Final review 8/10

it brings me joy that men (het) might be a little embarrassed to sing a long
